The Jordan Valley is the eastern border of present-day Israel. Strategically, it guards the eastern approach to the major population centers of Israel from attack by Jordan, Iraq, and Syria.

Situated in a harsh desert environment, this valley became known as the "hothouse of Europe" for its pioneering desert agriculture.

While the Lord has given Israel land on the eastern bank of the Jordan River, it was when the nation crossed into the western bank that it really entered into its inheritance:

Moses My servant is dead. Now therefore, arise, go over this Jordan, you and all this people, to the land which I am giving to them-the children of Israel. Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given you, as I said to Moses.
